About
Maggie Blake Bailey
I am a writer, maker, and teacher whose work moves across poetry, fiction, and fiber arts. Whether working with language or with cloth, I am drawn to the careful attention that both require and the ways making can reveal what might otherwise remain hidden. My creative practice is rooted in observation, process, and the belief that meaning is built slowly through what we choose to notice and carry.

The Work of Writing

I am the author of Visitation (Tinderbox Editions) and the chapbook Bury the Lede (Finishing Line Press). My poetry has appeared in journals including Rust + Moth, Foundry, The Windhover, and The Rappahannock Review.

My poems explore the layered experiences of motherhood, faith, the body, and memory. With language that is both grounded and lyrical, my work attends closely to the tensions between love and loss, presence and absence, rupture and repair.

In addition to poetry, I am the author of the Measure Twice Mystery Series, a collection of novels that bring my attentiveness to detail into narrative form. Set within a world shaped by craft and careful work, the series explores how people construct their lives, what they conceal, and what it takes to uncover the truth.

With language that is at once lyrical and grounded, my poems balance clarity and surprise, offering images that feel both unexpected and inevitable.

Making & Material

Alongside my writing, I maintain an active practice in sewing and fiber arts. My work is guided by a respect for materials, an interest in traditional techniques, and a commitment to making objects that are both functional and meaningful.

For me, making is not separate from writing. Both are acts of construction. Both require patience, revision, and a willingness to begin again. Through my handwork, I engage questions of utility, beauty, and the quiet stories embedded in the things we create and use.

Teaching & Community

I teach sewing and writing to students of all ages, offering workshops, classes, and conference presentations that emphasize process, curiosity, and skill-building.

My teaching invites participants to:

  • Develop confidence through practice
  • Engage deeply with creative work
  • Build technical and expressive skills
  • Find meaning in both process and outcome

I work with youth and adults, as well as schools, arts organizations, and conferences, creating spaces where creativity feels accessible, thoughtful, and grounded in real experience.

A Connected Practice

Across everything I do, writing, making, and teaching, I return to a shared set of questions: How do we shape what we carry? What do we choose to reveal? What does it mean to make something with care?

My work reflects a life lived in attention to both the visible and the unseen, where language and material meet, and where making becomes a way of understanding.
